It was a great pleasure to explore a new approach to Carmen in Peter Brook's adaptation, La Tragedie de Carmen. What a thrill to be reunited with Mario Corradi as stage director, whom I worked with in 2009 on Nabucco with Michigan Opera Theater. I enjoyed exploring a new approach to my favorite opera character! Thank you Opera Naples for allowing me the opportunity!

"Obviously a Carmen of longstanding, veteran Carla Dirlikov handles Brooks' version expertly. In the first act, this Carmen is in perpetually purveyed heat, teasing and tempting -even batting her eyes at the audience with an entrance from atop the seating area, cooing the Habanera. She plants a full kiss on the shocked Micaela, an implicit boast that "This is all the passion you'll ever get, girlfriend."
Further, she holds a trajectory in the second act that puts Carmen on a new path, one of sort of serial monogamy. Don't get your hopes up; she still dies.
Brooks' interpretation of the two main characters is meant, we suspect, to show us that as one slides into an emotional abyss that turns him into a serial murderer, the other rises into a person of spirituality who fears nothing, including death."
